Supergirl 4x12 : Menagerie review

Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.

Supergirl returns after it's little break with an interesting episode to say the least. It begins at night as we see a couple whom after attempting a jewelry heist are attempting to get away in their car. All of a sudden a meteor comes blasting out of the sky and lands in an open area just missing the car. The guy gets jammed in the car while the girl goes to investigate what is in the crash site. What is there is an Alien Symbiote who merges with the woman. At John's office we see him Kara and Alex together. Alex who still seems off about something and even mentions how much she feels like she's failed at her personal life as of late. She barely dates anymore, put her adoption plan on hold and focuses solely on being the DEO's director. Kara and Alex's relationship has been so intriguing to watch as of late as it's been completely flipped which really has been the highlight so far in the back half of this season. Alex gets a call about the Symbiote I mentioned earlier and she learns that it's victims have their hearts completely removed clean from their chest. This episode being set around Valentines Day just plays into the irony of it all. Brainiac-5 goes to pay Nia a visit and mentions that they should start training but Nia is unconvinced. She's still getting over the passing of her mom to which Brainiac says she should put her feelings into a little box and bury them away. Before leaving Nia invites him to a party that her roomate is having to which he agrees.

Back at John's office once more and we see Kara and him working on his latest case. The apparent kidnapping of a woman's husband who just so happens to be the same guy who signed off an Alien contract. John suggests that he get Alex to work with him and Kara but she denies his request. Kara later says how she isn't bothered by not working with Alex as much as both herself and Supergirl as it gives her sister more time to herself and more time to find her true calling and eventually start a family of her own. So after getting a location John and Kara go to a house which inside lays 2 bodies with their hearts removed once again. Alex and DEO agents show up and we're finally introduced to the cause of all the deaths. Menagerie a Symbiote who can bond with people (It's basically like Venom in a sense) this gives Pamela the human host incredible strength and powers. Powers that catch Alex and co off guard. Watching Alex get all worried after Menagerie catches Kara's jacket and rips it was proper funny and honestly quite cute. Pamela gets away but after learning of a Valentines day ball happening she travels to the location sets her sights on more victims and even more jewelry. As that is what this is all about. Menagerie the Symbiote feeds on hearts while Pamela gets jewels. It's simple but it works. After Children Of Liberty show up to try and take down the Symbiote Supergirl arrives and dukes it out with Menagerie leading to Nia seizing the opportunity and coming to her aid. With a new suit and mask she really looks the part as she later asks Brainiac-5 to help train her. Supergirl however doesn't beat Menagerie infact it turns out to be Ben Lockwood's son who is sporting his father's helmet who cuts the head of the Symbiote off thus instilling more faith in his father and the Children Of Liberty.
The episode comes to a close as we see Alex and Kara talk at Kara's place. It's nothing major really but what is major is after being arrested and taken to prison we see Pamela get a message from one of the guards. The guard says it's from Manchester Black and before the episode cuts off we see the Symbiote is still inside of Pamela. No idea how since it's head got cleanly cut off but it's there. I enjoyed this episode even though it was seriously flawed at times. With a slow and unfunny first half it kicked into gear in the second which really saved it. But now Supergirl goes on break once more for 2 weeks and will return with Arrow & Flash the week beginning March 3rd. Until then Kara!
