Happy Death Day 2U review
I really liked the first Happy Death Day. At first when it's sequel was announced I was skeptical to say the least. I didn't know or think how they'd even make a sequel given how the original ended. But boy oh boy have they come up with a sequel. Returning character Tree who again is played by the wonderful Jessica Rothe finds herself reliving the same day over and over again. But this time it's not only her the baby faced killer is after it's everybody she knows. The cause of this is Tree's boyfriend's friend who after creating a new invention with his lab partners opens a loop in time. Yes this sequel is going full on Back To The Future with time travel esque moments and different dimensions. The multiverse theory even gets mentioned..third movie perhaps??
The first movie at the time was an absolute blast to be had. Sure it wasn't perfect by any means but it never took itself too seriously. That trend continues here with just enough content flipped around to satisfy and delight as Tree goes for a do over again and again. The pacing for the most part is good too bar a quite slow first 15-20 but after that it is plain and at times quite hilarious sailing. As I said earlier Jessica Rothe is just fantastic here and much like the original looks like she's having the time of her life even if she does die over and over again. Special mention must go to her death montage which sees her jumping out of an airplane wearing only a bikini, electrocuting herself inside of a bathtub and even running right into a woodchipper. It's brilliantly done and will have you laughing out loud
Happy Death Day 2U is different to the original in a way that it's completely flipped on it's head for the most part and offers quite a lot of emotional moments this time around also. With enough comedic moments and balls to the wall action this is a more than worthy follow up to the original and to be honest this franchise is quickly becoming one of my guilty pleasures. Very enjoyable!
