Gotham 5x3 : Penguin, Our Hero review
Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it
Gotham is back for it's third week running and this episode is easily the best thus far. Featuring plenty of amazing Penguin moments, the slow and subtle turn of Selina Kyle into Catwoman and Echo's slow decent into madness. It begins with Penguin who walks out of his bedroom only to be greeted by a choir who are singing Penguin, Our hero. The ego on Oswald is really enormous but it's why he's such a great character. As he arrives downstairs he is greeted to some bad news by Mr Penn who tells him that workers have been falling ill as they've been working throughout the night. Penguin seems barely bothered by this and moments later members of the Street Demonz bust in through the City Halls doors claiming that Penguin took out all their guys at their stronghold. After what we saw in last week's episode with ''Penguin Was Here'' sprayed on a wall it's a strong a reason as any for the men to target the villain. But Penguin says he didn't do anything and says if he wanted to start a gang war nobody would see it coming. The goons are placed in chains and hung in a room where they're tortured.
At the new GCPD safe haven supplies are running low as more and more people are flooding to the new location after last week's episode. Harvey tells Gordon that he shouldn't be holding the weight of the world on his shoulders and let others carry the load sometimes. Gordon says he's fine but really does look incredibly tired as you can see it in his eyes which was a nice touch. Bruce is also at the safe haven and is greeted by Selina whom after taking Ivy's plant last week says she's okay and feels better than ever before. She is at the safe haven however to ask for Bruce's help. She wants to track down Jeremiah and make him pay for what he did to her. She keeps getting flashbacks to the night where she was shot and it really does haunt her as Bruce agrees to help the two set off into the dark-zone. In the dark-zone awaits only trouble as the Mutant Gang and their leader attack the Bat/Cat duo but Selina who slowly changes throughout this episode really takes it to the gang and ends up actually seriously injuring the leader with her cat claws. Ripping the dude's face apart almost she is only stopped by the BATCLAW! yes the batclaw is finally show as Bruce uses it to rip Selina's hand away from the Mutant leader. He tells her that she's lost control and she says she's only beginning and will make Jeremiah pay. Further into the dark-zone the two go and eventually end up at a church with various glass paintings of Jeremiah on the inside and out. Inside however is something far more bizarre. A group of people are shown in a church sitting with a strange figure in front of them all. Turns out this is none other than Echo and she is recruiting followers for Jeremiah. Selina manages to worm her way into the group meeting upstairs but it's actually an initiation of sorts where all those attempting to become followers must show their loyalty by shooting others in the back of the head. Armed with only 1 bullet in each gun like you would if playing Russian Roulette all are placed in a circle and those that remain become followers. It's all pretty sicked and twisted but with Jeremiah all is fair game. Selina ends up getting caught out by Echo who really is the best part of the episode in my opinion. She tells Selina how she herself has a bullet stuck in the back of her head and how she can still sometimes feel it. It's all really good as various Harley Quinn like things are said as both Selina and her have a fight with Echo showing her athletic side. Selina is ultimately stabbed in the knee as Bruce arrives to help her. Echo escapes and Selina tells Bruce that she doesn't need him to do everything for her before limping off in pursuit of Echo and Jeremiah who I can't wait to see return to this show.
The episode ends back at the safe haven as after being betrayed by the same gang members he had held hostage Penguin and Gordon are placed into a cell. They are helped by one of the kids that Gordon helped in last week's episode and escape. Penguin downs the gang members and is labelled a hero by the people. Gordon is left to clean up the mess and after Harvey tracks down Barbara both he and Penguin are confronted by her outside of the safe haven. Jim refuses to get out of the way as Barbara gets ready to pull the trigger but none of this happens as the entire GCPD safe haven is blown to pieces from the inside. With the episode ending on Gordon who gets up and looks around in complete despair. This episode was genuinely brilliant. It had a nice flow, the connection between Bruce & Selina is heating up and Echo was just amazing to behold. A truly great episode which can hopefully kick start the season from here on out.
