Gotham 5x2 : Trespassers revew
Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it
Gotham's second episode in it's fifth and final season isn't all that interesting sadly as it doesn't really delve into much of the craziness that was expected. It isn't a bad episode by any means but compared to last week's thrilling premiere it feels somewhat lackluster. Let's get into it and it begins pretty much where last week's did end as a young boy named Will Thomas tells Jim that he escaped from a warehouse or sorts where young children were being held captive so they can build and excavate a tunnel for the people running the entire operation. He also tells Jim how there are many more kids back there and that he escaped during the night to go look for help. He says he walked over 9 miles in the dark zone to reach the GCPD as he promised his friends that he'd help them all. Jim ever the hero is reluctant at first given how lowly stocked the GCPD is on ammo but eventually agrees to help the kids and along with Harvey and others set off in search of the area where the boy mentioned. It just so happens that the place is beyond the Sirens club so Gordon goes to pay Barbara a visit to ask for her help. She is still reeling from last week's episode after Jim did nothing to stop Penguin from killing Tabitha. Gordon says he took Penguin down but Barbara is unconvinced by his words as he only shot him in his knee. Barbara says she won't help so Gordon sets off to the dark zone with Harvey and other GCPD officers. More on this situation later.
Bruce Wayne ups his search for the 'witch' mentioned in last week's episode by a nurse as a way to help Selina recover. Bruce stumbles upon a greenhouse / park of sorts and enters to find various bodies all covered in Ivy and roots before he is met by 3 men. They tell him of the witch and how they've gone and captured her and locked her into a room. Bruce tells them that he needs to talk with her. He lies by saying that she has his brother and is given 5 minutes to talk to her. Ivy predictably manages to seduce and get around Bruce by saying how the men have treated her and asks for his help which in return she will help him get a seed that has been growing outside of the building which when digested will restore Selina's spine leaving her able to walk again. Bruce agrees and once they are out of the room Ivy kills all the men Bruce was talking to earlier. Ivy threatens Bruce but he is having none of it and tells Ivy that it is Selina who needs help. She agrees to help Bruce and goes to dig up the seed that has been growing on the outside before giving it to Bruce with a warning that it might not even help Selina. I do wonder if Ivy will be back this season because right now it doesn't look likely. Her character had so much potential on this show and it's just been wasted so much in my opinion.
Speaking of wasted however remember at the end of season 4 when Mother & Orphan were revealed to be lurking in the shadows of Gotham?? well after Jim and the others rescue a majority of the kids from the workers who were treating them terribly he Harvey and 3 other kids are forced to go into hiding and go inside an abandoned hotel or sorts. Harvey and Jim investigate the rooms and Jim is greeted by Orphan and Harvey by Mother who attempts to kill him. He runs back to Jim who thinks the boy has been kidnapped but turns out that he isn't and he locks them outside one of the rooms where various bright lights are triggered which is supposed to render them useless so that Mother can have her way with them. Well she doesn't and her mask is removed and it's just a random lady who found the young boy as the destruction of Gotham into No Man's Land began. She thought him how to survive and how to stay alive in the city. She even gets away as Gordon and Harvey have other problems on their hands outside. The gang who had held all the kids hostage show up and along with another gang attempt to take out Gordon for Penguin who last week we saw is offering 100 thousand rounds for the police captain's head. Just as all seems lost Barbara shows up in a giant monster truck and kills all the gang members saving Gordon and in the process the 3 remaining kids who are taken to a new area within Gotham that the GCPD have taken over. It's bigger, more sustainable and more friendly as people flood in their droves to the area. Barbara says to Jim that they have some unfinished business and leaves.
The episode ends however back at the hospital where Selina is as Bruce arrives back with the seed and gives it to his friend who ingests it and seems fine for a few seconds but then goes into shock as the seed seemingly fixes her spine and corrects the damage done but it's all at a cost as Ivy earlier explained. She mentions how it brings out people's inner darkness. Can Selina live with that?? more importantly can Bruce?? a few hours pass and Selina's condition improves much to the surprise of the doctor. As Bruce and Alfred prepare to go home Bruce notices that Selina's bed is empty. He enters the room and within seconds is greeted by her actually walking around. She says she feels great and is in no pain. The two hug as it focuses on Selina who has green like cat eyes. This is the big change Ivy mentioned I presume as Selina's character will grow and change as this season progresses.
This episode was fine. It felt flat at some points and good at others. The relationship between Bruce & Selina is only going to get better as the season goes on and the inclusion of Jeremiah soon will be a doozy. Jim Gordon's focus is now on this new safe haven for Gotham and I'm interested to see where that goes. A worthy if at times slow and dull follow up to last week's episode that missed a lot of it's marks in my opinion. But that being said it sets up next week's episode pretty well which is always good. Until next week Gotham!
