Aquaman review

The 6th movie into the DCEU gives us the origin tale of Arthur Curry. The son of a lighthouse keeper and a Queen of a civilization beneath the waves. Arthur is born to be king of Atlantis and rule over both it and the world above. Jason Mamoa reprises his role as the titular hero and he really is comfortable with this character now. Always cracking jokes and having a good time he IS Aquaman / Arthur Curry now. He shows a lot softer side to the character this time around however as he struggles to deal with both lifes he lives. He lives above the seas but he is bound to be the King of the ocean below. The way he struggles with his duties is entirely compelling throughout and the risks and battles he takes on to overcome everything put in his path is what ultimately makes him a hero.

James Wan makes his entrance into the DCEU in style as he pulls off some of the most visually breathtaking scenes in comic book movie history. The first moment Arthur enters Atlantis with Mera (Amber Heard) is absolutely mindblowing and truthfully gave me goosebumps. But it's not just the visuals that are amazingly created by Wan it's the battle scenes also that are unlike any comic book movie before it. Even when characters are interacting underwater there's a faint echo over their voice which is a small detail but it's such a nice touch when you actually watch it and take it all in. As for the villain or should I say villains Patrick Wilson is entirely convincing as King Orm a vicious and war hungry ruler of Atlantis. The jealousy he has for his half breed brother is believable and him and Momoa's Aquaman's battles are both intense and big on scale. Abdul-Manteen II plays Black Manta and he too shows intense hatred for Aquaman given what Arthur does to his family early on in the movie.
As a whole Aquaman is a giant movie on an even bigger scale. Amber Heard is great as Mera and plays well alongside Momoa's Aquaman. Willem Dafoe is great as Vulko the trainer of Arthur form a young age and servant to King Orm. The pacing is good for the most part apart from a bit of muddled beginning that once it gets past the rest is a ride unlike anything else you'll see this year. James Wan has created a comic book movie unlike any other. One that is entirely entertaining and easily one of the DCEU's biggest triumphs.
