The Flash 5x1 : Nora review
Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.
The Flash returns for it's fifth season and what a way to return. Taking off pretty much from where season 4 ended we're introduced to Nora-West Allen who we learn is The Flash in Central City 30 years from the current time period. She tells everyone at Joe's house that she is stuck in the current time because of a mistake she made and also confesses that it was she who helped Barry take down Devoe's satellite at the end of last season. This mean's she's stuck with her mom, dad and everyone else of Team Flash whom she hopes can help her find a way home. Barry even has Wally consult the Legends to see if they can find a way home for Nora. Right off you see the connection between Barry and Nora who instantly hit it off (even if Nora gets on Barry's nerves sometimes) the two are so much fun to watch on screen together. The same can not really be said for Iris however who struggles to connect with her daughter as the two go for a coffee that is insanely awkward at times, for Iris not for the audience. Throughout the episode also are various hints at future events and past events as Nora mentions The Flash Museum, a future battle between King Shark and Gorilla Grodd and the first time The Flash met Supergirl which was adorable.
As the team try to send Nora home with the help of Barry they learn that she has negative tachyons running throughout her body which effects her powers and the ability to run fast enough to get back to her time period. As Barry tries to find out just why this is happening he asks Nora about his future and in the time vault she shows him his future. And it's the same article from season 1 which mentions The Flash vanishing in a crisis. But that's not all as Nora also shows her father that he never returns home even after 25 years. Leaving Iris and Nora by themselves in the future and this is when Nora finally tells Barry the truth as she tells him that she isn't stuck in this time period. She is only here to see her father because he disappeared when she was very young age and she never got to know him. She actually says their first meeting was Barry and Iris's wedding in last year's big crossover event which was a nice little nod. As for the negative tachyons in her body it was just something she took from The Flash Museum to help her stay with her father for longer. Barry upset over missing out on everything with his daughter growing up is upset of course but it's all short lived as a new meta who Nora knows named Girdlock who has the ability to harness power each time something touches him arrives in Central City and it's up to Team Flash to stop him. After the events of season 4's finale Barry has no suit but that's not a problem as Nora presents him with The Flash ring from the museum and we see The Flash in his new super suit, which still looks odd without a chin strap but I'm sure it'll grow on me overtime.
With no real way to locate Gridlock thanks to Devoe, Cisco resorts to hacking phones and learns that he is aboard a plane which we see him on board and within seconds he destroys both engines. With a plane heading right from the city all 3 Flash's team up (Barry, Nora and Wally) to stop Gridlock and divert the plane. With the help of Cisco all 3 are vibed on board and apprehend Gridlock but it's the plane scene that is the standout in the episode honestly as this show goes full on comic book and has all 3 Flash's help faze the plane through buildings until it can safely crash into the sea saving everyone on board. It was also really nice to see Barry help Nora who had never fazed before. It was done in such a cool throwback way as it flashed between when Dr Wells (Reverse Flash) told Barry how to faze and now he was telling Nora what to do. This entire episode is a real treat throughout.
It comes to a close back at Star Labs as Nora prepares to go home Barry tells everyone that he wants to pause for a while and get to know his daughter more. Iris seems happy with his choice and Nora seems elated. She agrees to stay in the lounge of Star Labs which is a new area introduced in a hilarious way as we see Joe in there and he says he's been taking naps in there since day 1 which was a nice set up. So Nora is sticking around which should be a lot of fun as I said her relationship with her parents especially Barry is amazing. I'm sure her and Iris's relationship will also blossom and prosper as the season goes on. The episode truly ends however as we see Gridlock being transported via a security team that is interrupted by this season's big bad Cicada who kills all the security team and tells Gridlocks that he wants all meta's dead before cutting off. This episode was brilliant, and a fine way to kick start season 5 of The Flash. Nora is a delight to watch on screen and the tone felt more like the earlier 2 seasons which was good. I had high hopes for this season heading in and the premiere didn't disappoint one bit. Welcome back Team Flash it's good to be in your company once more.
