Supergirl 4x3 : Man Of Steel review
Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it
Much like episode 3 of Supergirl's third season this episode is incredibly well told and really interesting. It begins where last week ends as Supergirl who after being hit with Kryptonite from the device that Mercy & Otis Graves along with a DEO put into the atmosphere. Alex learns of the current goings on rather quickly and asks Jonn to rescue Kara from plummeting to her death. He does within split seconds of her hitting the ground and takes her back to the DEO where Brainiac-5 tells everyone that she is hurt really bad. So with time running out Jonn has Brainiac go get the shield they used to help beat Astra and Alex turns on yellow sunlight over a motionless Kara. But that's not the real story of the episode as the real star here is Agent Liberty or should I say Ben Lockwood. A man with a family, a disgruntled father and the co runner of Lockwood Family Steel along with his dad.
This episode tells the story of Ben Lockwood and his family so well. It starts off rather slowly as we're taken back to 2 years ago when Supergirl gave he address to the people before Project Myriad. The Lockwood family discuss the situation and Ben's dad is strongly against Alien life on Earth and tells his son that they are roaches and should be treated as so. As the story goes on Ben descends further and further into complete madness and anarchy as The Daxmites from season 2 invade and the genesis of Reign's invasion crumbles National City to it's knees. Now a professor Ben is fired almost as soon as he gets his job over comments made during his lectures towards Alien life. There's also nice little nods to past episodes like Kara and co's karaoke night at a bar from last season and Cat Grant's press conference at the beginning of season 2. As for Ben Lockwood himself his character is well fleshed out here as his anger and lack of patience really begins to wear thin with Alien life. Later in the episode when his father is ultimately killed during the Reign attack he loses his mind and this is when Agent Liberty is first born. His father tells him to stand up and put Earth first. To stand up and defend their home. This leads to Ben gathering his own little gang in which they hunt down Alien's and flat out kill them. Mercy Graves notices this and as Ben is out campaigning she along with Otis offer Ben a way to really make a change to which he agrees. Lena Luthor wouldn't help him when he and his family needed it and the DEO wouldn't help him either. So he plans to take it upon himself to put Earth first and work with the Grave siblings as Agent Liberty.
Back at the DEO and with time running out for Kara, Alex calls up Lena and asks her for a solution to Kara's current situation. And this is where Supergirl's new suit (for the time being) is introduced. It's very space like but it makes sense as moments before Brainiac-5 says that the only way to help Kara improve is to get her out of Earth's atmosphere. And that is where the episode ends as Liberty and the Grave siblings plan to kill Supergirl falls short as Kara is saved by Lena. This episode was brilliant. It was well told, well thought out and entirely interesting. Agent Liberty is an interesting character for sure and he will be quite the foe for Supergirl to go up against. Rest up now Kara you got this!
