A Star Is Born review
Featuring the directorial debut of it's main star Bradley Cooper, A Star Is Born is an ambitious and dazzling achievement in film making. Following the story of a musician named Jack (Cooper) as he helps a young woman named Ally (Lady Gaga) find fame and success in the music industry. It's a simple story but A Star Is Born is elevated to unbelievable heights by the performances of it's two main stars. First off is Lady Gaga who at times is absolutely astounding in her role as a struggling woman who goes from signing in bars and waiting on tables to being featured on Saturday Night Live she plays the role perfectly, never forgetting who she is and want she wants to do to succeed. But it's Bradley Cooper who turns in a career defining performance as Jack. A loved musician who's life spirals out of control as quickly as Ally's rises. Becoming addicted to alcohol and drugs his performance is raw, passionate and emotional.
The pacing is great throughout and while some jokes and various other things don't really hit the mark they intend it doesn't take away from the overall vibe the movie has going for it. Gaga as you'd expect excels during the musical numbers but what is surprising is how good Cooper is through these scenes also. He really fits the part and gives Gaga's Ally a really run for her money. As the whole movie comes to a close you won't rush out of the cinema. You'll sit and reflect for a moment on just what you watched and were a part of as A Star Is Born really draws you in and makes you feel for it's 2 main characters.
With some incredibly acted out scenes, especially towards the end as you can really see the pain in Cooper's characters eyes A Star Is Born is not only a remake of a remake it puts enough material in to completely flip the story and characters on their heads. Cooper puts in a career best performance and Gaga is sublime. A Star Is Born is essential viewing and is easily one of 2018's finest movies.
