Ocean's 8 review
The wave of female led movies over the years has never been a smooth ride. From Rough Night to god forbid Ghostbusters but with Ocean's 8 it hits a lot of the right notes. Notice I said a lot not all as it does pose some flaws throughout particularly in it's character's and some scenes that added little to nothing to the overall narrative and flow. Sandra Bullock leads a pretty impressive cast which also includes Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter (who bolsters a pretty terrible Irish accent, why she just didn't use her own accent is beyond me) Anne Hathaway, Rihanna and others. The cast as I say impressive but the characters they play? not so much honestly. Apart from Anne Hathaway who is just brilliant as an over the top New York socialite but other than her the rest of the characters are pretty under developed which is a shame as there is some really talented actresses here.
The story in itself is nothing new either as Bullock's character (who is the sister of George Clooney's Danny Ocean who was in the original Ocean trilogy)after getting out of jail on parole assembles an all female crew in an attempt to steal a high quality necklace valued at over 150 million dollars from New York's annual Met Gala. It's a simple set up and while it will entertain the whole assembling the crew part really chugged along at a slow pace with some scenes that really didn't need to be there. The actual heist itself however was really enjoyable. It was filled with suspense and a sense of not knowing whether these characters could pull it all off or not. Anne Hathaway again shines throughout here and without her I think this movie wouldn't be nearly as good.
Ocean's 8 isn't a bad movie by any means as there is some solid scenes but I think it could have benefited from some more humor as for the most part it's pretty serious. Included also are a whole lot of cameo's from various celebrities (won't spoil who appears) but it left me feeling sorta empty afterwards. Sure it's entertaining as a whole but Ocean's 8 isn't something you're going to remember once you leave the cinema. It might stick in your head for a while (Anne Hathaway's performance especially) but other than that this was a lackluster experience. Ocean's 8 is certainly a step in the right direction for the all female character driven movies. So overall it's not bad but you could be going to see a whole lot better.
