Tully review
With Tully we're given a pretty simple premise of women marries a guy has 3 kids struggles to keep up with everyday life and everything else in between that you'd associate with motherhood but once you delve into this movie deeper there's a whole lot more to the premise then just meets the eye.
The story revolves around a woman named Marlo (Charlize Theron) as she struggles with the day to day life activities of looking after her family while not showing much self care for herself. As I said the premise is nothing really original but Tully is lifted to new heights by really impressive performances. Charlize Theron is just brilliant as Marlo. It's an entirely different side you'll see of her both in a physical way and definitely in an emotional way. Having put on weight for the role she has completely transformed herself to the point where you sometimes forget you're even watching Charlize Theron which was another plus for me. The rest of the cast do a stand up job here also including Mackenzie Davis who is so lovably quirky as the night nanny who Theron's Marlo eventually ends up calling to help her with her newborn child. The connection they have on screen is both entertaining to watch and also so cute at times.
Being a guy and not knowing about the struggles of motherhood and what women go through both during and after birth this movie is real eye opener into what actually happens and how women cope or at least try to. It's the most real take on motherhood you'll see from a movie in a long time. Some might call this a women's picture but I'd have to disagree. I'd thoroughly recommend this to guys also as it really shows the effects that motherhood can have not just on the mother but the father also gets a nod and at the end of the day parenthood really is a two person game whatever way you look at it. Being just over 90 minutes Tully doesn't suffer from any pace grinding moments and there is actually plenty of laugh out loud moments that also help smooth out the plot and keep it moving along rather swiftly. Tully is aimed at a more mature audience but it is definitely something you should take time out to see as it is very real both in it's premise, very raw in it's characters and their development. Brilliant!
