Supergirl 3x20 : Dark Side Of The Moon review
Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it
This week's episode of Supergirl begins above the stars as Mon-El and Kara are continuing their quest to retrieve the black rock that is key to reversing Reign and ultimately restoring Sam to her normal self. They run into a tractor beam but manage to get around it and land at a mysterious city that is inhabited by humans or at least it looks that way. They disguise themselves to try and fit in before stumbling upon some Kryptonian writing on a panel but just as they are about to get the black rock a bunch of defense robots rush in before being called off by none other than Kara's mom. Kara overcome with emotion runs to her mom's arms as they both can't believe that they are seeing one another again. Turns out this isn't a mysterious city at all. In fact it's Argo City a part of Krypton that is protected by a shield that Kara's father had made before he died, his legacy lives on through it as it protects all inhabitants and gives them a fresh clean place to live in. Only down side is that they can't send or get any signals and that is why Kara never even know about it for as long as she has been on Earth. Seeing Kara interact with her mom was the real highlight of this episode as her mom is played by Erica Durance (Lois Lane in Smallville) and she and Kara share a great bond on screen right off the bat.
Back on Earth almost everyone awaits Supergirl and Mon-El's return with the black rock to finally stop Reign who Lena Luthor still has locked up like an animal. The kryptonite that she made seems to wearing off as Reign becomes more and more immune to it thanks to the other 2 World Killer's powers. Alex and Ruby spend some quality time together in the park but not before someone flat out tires to kill Alex as she is seen trying on sunglasses she notices a figure in the reflective mirror and sends Ruby off to get some soda's for them both a grenade gets thrown at her but she deals with the situation really well and nobody gets hurt. At the DEO her Jonn and Winn try to figure out just who is after her and why. As Alex runs through the suspects Winn is asked to babysit Ruby as Alex her suspect is a cop from the first arrest she ever made at the age of 17. This is also the same cop from episode 6 this season which was a flashback heavy episode which was a nice little touch. Turns out it's not the cop who is after her though and as Alex and Jonn come up with another plan they ultimately find out who it is. It's one of the first prisoner's from Fort Rozz caught on this show's twin brother who wants revenge on Alex for putting his brother in prison. A simple close to a big side plot in this episode that actually felt important rather than a throwaway plot.
But the main part of this episode is Kara of course and as she prepares to meet members of Argo City's high council they tell her that they can't part with the black rock as it is a resource far too precious to them. Kara overcome with passion and a sense of steel (Girl Of Steel reference) manages to get them to go to a vote and they actually do end up granting her a piece of this rock. So it's time to return to Earth but not before Kara and her mom share an emotional goodbye but they know this time that they will see each other again which is a nice reversal on what happened previous. The episode ends back at Lena's lab as Reign is very close to becoming completely immune to kryptonite Mon-El and Supergirl bust in through the roof and it fades the Supergirl logo just as they are about to fight it out. I really liked this episode. It had a really good family theme and is easily one of the strongest episodes this season in my opinion. This is Supergirl flying high and flying proud!
