Deadpool 2 review

The merc with the mouth is back with his very own sequel that builds on the previous movie while at the same time never forgetting what made the first one so great. The story this time around follows Deadpool as he brings together a team of fellow mutant rogues to protect a young boy of supernatural abilities from the brutal time travelling mutant / mercenary Cable. That's the pretty much the story in a nutshell but we aren't here for the story are we? Deadpool 2 is a whole lot more adventurous than the first one and right of the bat it shows as the opening is equal parts hilarious and emotional. Complete with a James Bond style intro it really sets the tone for the rest of the movie brilliantly.

What made the first Deadpool movie so great was Ryan Reynolds and he is as brilliant as he was back then but here he is bolstered by some really fun performances which help to make this sequel feel more complete and rounded than it's predecessor. You got Josh Brolin who is both unrelenting and coy as Cable and a newcomer Zazie Beetz who plays Domino. Deadpool's very own lucky charm as he himself puts it. With cameos from some surprising characters from X-Men lore and a few other surprises this is easily one of the best movies you'll see all summer long. And as Deadpool himself puts it during the opening this movie is a family movie but it's unlike any family move you'll EVER see. Which he is completely right about it as the characters do become a family. A completely bonkers family but a family nevertheless.
Onto the pacing and with the movie being just shy of 2 hours long it doesn't feel like it at all as the pace is like
Cable unrelenting as it moves from set piece to set piece and while some jokes don't exactly hit their intended target that doesn't take anything away from the overall vibe that Deadpool 2 has going for it. As I said Ryan Reynolds really is the highlight here and as of now he really is Deadpool and nobody will ever be able to take that away from him. With some fast paced action hilarious scenes and a sense of tenderness about it (at times) Deadpool 2 is the most fun I've had in a cinema in long long time and that equals a must see movie. Fingers crossed for Deadpool 3!
