Supergirl 3x14 : Schott Through The Heart review
Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it
Supergirl finally returns after it's long hiatus away to fit in Legends Of Tomorrow's remaining episodes. With that show now finished until October Kara Zor El is free to return and what an emotionally charged episode to come back with. It begins as we see Kara pumping up all her friends. We got Alex, James, Winn, Jon and even Jon's father. Turns out she's pumping them up for some karaoke and what follows is both hilarious and adorable in a sense. It's mainly Kara who's adorable well because she's Kara and she's always like this. But we're treated to some karaoke by everyone including Jon's father who really nailed it I thought. It's when Winn is just about to do his song that a special bulletin comes on the news. Turns out his father Winslow Schott Sr has been found dead in prison. Winn drops the mic (literally) and storms out into the alley where James follows him and tries to talk to him. A really good start that featured everything from laughs to musical numbers to one man's remorse and utter disgust of his maniacal father.
Skip forward a bit and as Winn's father is getting buried practically nobody shows up apart from all his close friends..and his estranged mother who tries to reconnect with her son to no avail at first but throughout the episode they do both seem to form a bond as the one thing that was stopping them (Winn's dad) is now gone or is he? as Winn and his mom talk and the coffin including the Toyman's remains is being lowered into it's grave it explodes in an instant but not before Supergirl can swoop in and make sure everyone is okay. ''He always wanted to go out with a bang'' explains Winn's mom. Back at the DEO and as Jon and his dad agreed back at the bar to host a housewarming party for Alex in their new apartment and as she agrees to join them this leaves only Supergirl, James and Winn to hold down the fort. And hold down the fort they do as an army of flying toy monkeys invade the DEO in search of both Winn and his mother they manage to overcome the flying beasts but learn of a Toyman apprentice of some sorts. Winn's mom is suspicious of this and goes to find out just who or what is causing all this and it turns out it's a prison guard that met Toyman while he was hold up in prison. She tells of his brilliance and how just amazing of a person he was leaving Winn's mom in a form of disgust. This is of course when she gets kidnapped by this new apprentice and it's up to Supergirl James Winn and Mon-El to save the day as they prepare an assault on a toy factory that houses all manner of stuff including flying bombs, flame spewing trucks a giant T-Rex and a package that Supergirl ends up getting caught in. A real life sized Supergirl action figure. Mon-El manages to help her break free but that was a nice little touch. It isn't Supergirl and Mon-El though who end up stopping the apprentice and saving the day oh no it's Winn and his mom and I felt that was really appropriate to be honest. A bit of a weak villain but the over the top and blown up act made it all worthwhile. More on Jon his dad and Alex now and at their apartment they all share dinner together and talk about all manner of things from racism to the ability to blend in today's society. Shortly after Jon goes to fetch his chocolate pie that he made for dessert and this is when Jon's dad tells Alex that he wishes he had some grand kids. Of course we the viewer know he has 2 or had as they were ultimately destroyed on Mars by the white martians. But Alex questions this and he tells her that he is suffering from a sort of mental decay or as we know it dementia. He tells Alex that Jon must not find out and as she tells him that this is a secret too big to keep he tells her to leave and she does. Later he ends up telling his son in what was really an emotional scene. Going to be interesting to see how this aspect plays out over the remainder of the season.
The episode ends however as Mon-El tells Kara the real reason why the Legion came to this time period. Turns out that 3rd World Killer evolves in the future and becomes Blight killing anyone and everything she comes into contact with. The Legion came to this time period to stop it from every happening and now they have Supergirl's help in trying to stop her from eventually evolving and destroying everything in her path. I loved this episode sure it wasn't heavily focused on action but it did show off some real human emotion especially between Winn and his mom. A welcome return for Supergirl and here's to the rest of the season!
