Gotham 4x17 : Mandatory Brunch Meeting review
Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it
This week's episode of Gotham begins pretty much where it left off last week as we see Bruce Wayne going to the address that he had gotten last week. The same address where Jerome is going. Bruce with a serious glint in his eye enters a room only to find a man who is under Jervis Tetch's control. This is when Gordon busts in and shoots the clock next to the man to stop Jervis's spell but it's no use as the man has a pocket watch on him which leads to him blowing himself up in the process. I guess you can say this was quite the EXPLOSIVE start?! (I'm sorry that was terrible)
At Penguin's house we see Jerome and his newly named 'Legion Of Horrible's' having their very first mandatory brunch meeting hench the title of the episode. Filled with so many familiar faces like Mr Freeze, Penguin. Firefly Scarecrow Mad Hatter and Jerome himself this was a really cool scene if nothing just for the fact that we got to see all these villains on screen together at the same time. Skip forward a bit and we see Jerome all by himself in an elevator with a woman. He tells her that he used to be a good whistler until his face was ripped off which was hilarious. Jerome is actually in a corporate building much like Wayne Enterprises as he storms into the boardroom complete with shotgun in hand he questions the top guy in the board about a man named Xander Wilde an engineer and someone who Jerome seemed very keen on finding. Jerome ends up killing the same guy he questioned but not before he tells him that the only way he ever interacted with this Mr Wilde was through a proxy. Jerome makes his escape with the help of Firely from Gordon and Bullock who show up. Complete with his own version of a knock knock joke. Everything about him just screams Joker from his mannerisms to even the way he shoots his gun whether it be a shotgun or just a regular handgun. More on Xander Wilde later. At the Narrows it's revealed that The Riddler is hosting his own game night where people try to outwit him with riddles in a bid to win some big cash prizes. Nobody actually wins as the riddles end up being too difficult for them to decipher but that isn't the case when Lee walks into the newly named 'riddle factory' as she challenges The Riddler to his own game. She ends up actually trumping him. In a bid to get the old Ed back she ends up leaving him stumped but eventually she overcomes and wins. Later on Lee comes back and tells Riddler that she knows that he loves her deep down and that together they'd make a good team. They even full on make out which was interesting. I never expected Lee to go down the road of a full on villain but it seems likely after this. Speaking of Riddler though his best pal the Penguin who is apart of Jerome's gang goes to try and recruit Grundy (Butch) for the cause and almost gets himself killed in the process. He later returns and tells Grundy that he knows someone who can cure him and it's none other than Hugo Strange. I honestly didn't think we'd ever get Strange back on the show but it looks likely now. Grundy agrees to join Jerome's gang but tells Penguin that if he doesn't deliver he'll pop his head off his shoulders.
More on Xander Wilde now and it turns out that he worked on the development of Wayne Tower with Thomas Wayne before his death. Gordon and Bullock learn of this as they go visit Bruce and Alfred who tell them that Thomas used to keep notes of everything that he was involved in. Alfred finds the notes which leads to Gordon and Bullock going to pay this Xander Wilde a visit. But before they get there Jerome pays a visit to the 'proxy' that the board member mentioned to him earlier. Turns out it's a woman and she flat out KO's Jerome leaving him to be taken hostage by her and placed in a room where someone appears to be watching him. This is when Gordon and Bullock arrive and Xander Wilde is finally revealed. Turns out he is none other than Jerome's twin brother. Jeremiah the name given to him at birth. Now I don't know if this is straight genius by Gotham or the complete opposite. Cameron Monaghan nails the role perfectly though. Giving Jeremiah a quite somber tone compared to Jerome's completely bonkers personality. Jeremiah tells Gordon and Bullock that he had to leave home at a young age as his uncle informed him to do so as Jerome's behavior began to really spiral out of control. He killed his own mother and tortured Jeremiah before he even left he says all while Gordon and Bullock remain slightly suspicious of him. This interesting back and forth between them is interrupted by Jervis Tetch and Scarecrow (no idea how they found the location unless they followed Gordon and Bullock) who arrive to bust out Jerome. They succeed and this is when Jerome bumps into his twin brother. They share a really intense scene that is short lived of course as Jerome makes his escape into the night and Gordon promises to look after Jeremiah and places him in GCPD protective custody. I had no words when all that ended honestly it's like Gotham just pulled it's trump card. The Joker card. I have no idea how they'll explain the whole situation between the twin brothers but based on leaked set pictures and my own theories I really do think that Jeremiah will become the Clown Prince Of Crime..The Joker. All I can say is watch this space..
Back at Penguin's place and Scarecrow informs Jerome that his new toxin is finished which leads to Crane gassing a random business guy who completely loses it. He begins to laugh manically and blood runs from his eyes. I'm not sure how I feel about another gas based virus being let loose on the city if I'm being honest. We had it last year with the Alice Tetch virus it just feels very similar. But we'll just have to wait and see what happens over the next few weeks. All in all this was a really fun episode that almost felt like Gotham just pulled the rug out from under it's viewers. Easily one of the most interesting episodes to date and one that will be remembered as a turning point for the future. Until next week Gotham!
