Gotham 4x14 : Reunion review

Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it

The theme of this episode of Gotham is a given right away as the title tells us. It's a 'Reunion' style episode. And while not a perfect episode by any means it did steady the flow and overall narrative after last week's jumbled mess of an episode.  The episode begins as we see Bruce Wayne opening a suitcase. This suitcase contains the prototype Batman suit complete with mask that he had worn earlier in the season. Bruce looks at it for a few seconds only to throw the mask into the blazing fire inside of Wayne Manor. Skip to a bar and Ivy enters looking for Harvey Bullock who she is told isn't there as he is out sick. This leads to Ivy using her new and improved plants to kill everyone in the bar within seconds. Turns out Ivy knows that Harvey killed her father and she wants revenge. Jim finds out about all this as him Lucius and some other cops go to the bar and find Ivy's plants having taken control over almost all her victims bodies. Gordon goes to visit Harvey before Ivy can and the two bicker as Harvey is still upset that Jim took his job as Police Captain. So Harvey goes out looking for Ivy on his own (he walks out of his apartment without pants on which was very amusing) he heads to the Narrows where he says he has lots of contacts willing to give him information. He gets information alright but as he calls up Jim to tell him that he's located Ivy he is actually under her spell and the two of them duke it out in a distiller room. Jim comes out on top of course and goes after Ivy once again.

Bruce Wayne feeling bad about what he did to Alfred and having rang him up last week meets his former Butler in a diner and the two have a chat. Alfred tells Bruce that while he might have changed that doesn't give him the right to just waltz in and ask him to come back. Life doesn't work like that. And people don't act like that and they shouldn't expect things to just go back to normal. Bruce tells him that he is willing to do anything to prove to Alfred that he is changed but Alfred tells him that it is something he must figure out on his own and become the man who his parents would be proud of. Later at a Wayne Foundation dinner Bruce gives a speech and mentions Alfred leading to the two of them reconnecting in a way. Alfred questions Bruce's darkness inside him and tells him that his greatest asset is his heart. Bruce storms out of the room but not long after Ivy enters threatening to kill everyone. Alfred tries to intervene but is taken out by her goons. This leads to Bruce taking one of Ivy's men's getup and he tries to rescue not only Alfred but others. He is eventually chased away by Gordon and escapes (like Batman would) into the night. Back at Wayne Manor as Bruce and Alfred talk more he tells Bruce that he is proud of him and he knows that his parents would be also. Bruce offers to drive Alfred into Gotham but he tells him that there is no need as he is already home. Finally Bruce and Alfred are together again. The Riddler is also featured very heavily in this episode as he tries to further tighten his grip over Ed Nygma who feels like his continuing to lose his mind. The Riddler tells Ed that soon he won't be able to stop him and that he will be in full control. Ed even thinks about killing himself to end the torture which was surprise but eventually he comes to a compromise with his much darker side. He will sign himself into Arkham. At Arkham as he is about to sign himself in Penguin enters the room and tells him that The Riddler read his letter and he is the reason Ed is here. Penguin says he needs The Riddler and this is when Ed finally realizes who he is. He IS The Riddler and he agrees to help Penguin escape. No mention or sighting of Jerome in this episode which was a bit of a disappointment to say the least.
Sofia heats up her plan to fully control Gotham including the Narrows as she offers Lee a deal of 30% income and everything in the Narrows. Both legal and illegal. Lee being the strong woman that she is has none of this as it would literally force the people of the Narrows into practically nothing but Sofia threatens her more and Lee comes up with a different sort of deal. She tells Sofia that she can give her dirt on Gordon but as we the viewer know Sofia already has some major dirt on Jim. This leads to Sofia telling Lee that she owns the Narrows already and she brutally caves her hand in with a hammer in a pretty gruesome scene. Not long after this Gordon gets a call about Lee and he goes to see her in the hospital but she is out cold as he stands outside the room. The episode ends back at the GCPD as Gordon confesses everything to Harvey. He tells him that Sofia hired the PYG and that he knew about everything only to cover it up. He also vows to take down Sofia once and for all and that is where it ends. This episode was such a major improvement on last week's episode. It flowed a lot better and didn't feel overly silly like last weeks. This is the Gotham I know and love!
