Lady Bird review

I've always believed that movies are at their best when they are simple in not only the tone characters and setting but in it's story and Lady Bird has all those in spades.Written and directed by Greta Gerwig Ladybird tells the story of an artistically inclined 17 year old girl (Saoirse Ronan) living in Sacramento California. As I said the premise is pretty simple and that is why this movie shines. Saoirse Ronan once again proves she is a really talented actress almost lighting up the screen whenever she appears. She's funny charming and so easy to connect with as a character. Speaking of her character the journey that she goes on throughout the movie is also really good and all credit must go to not only Saoirse Ronan but Greta Gerwig who has crafted a really beautiful movie.
Not only is this a journey for Ladybird but also for her family as her father falls on difficult times it's up to her mother to provide for the family and the relationship she and her daughter share was one of the highlights of the movie for me. The focus of a relationship between mother and daughter is always interesting to watch but in this it is put into the spotlight at major points of the movie and you actually do connect with both characters. The mom is played brilliantly by Laurie Metcalf and she shares a really good on screen connection with Saoirse Ronan's Ladybird that actually gets quite emotional at times leading to what was a really emotionally charged ending as major changes happen in the characters lives. That being said the ending is heartfelt and almost like a love letter to all parents and just a message to say I love you.

Ladybird is funny, charming and just an overall good time. Another stellar performance from Saoirse Ronan and something really special crafted by Greta Gerwig. A must see!
