The Greatest Showman review
The Greatest showman is a lot of things. It's at it's absolute best in it's many musical numbers which feature original songs from the Greatest Show to Never Enough to The Other Side to everything else in between that are all a joy to watch as the choreography is just sublime and so easy on the ears to listen to. The opening scene is absolutely spectacular and really sets up the movie so well. It's hard not to just fall in love with the movie right from the get go.While it's at it's worst during it's love story element which really hinders the whole thing and takes you out of the movie after every music scene. Hugh Jackman stars as P.T. Barnum a man who after losing his job opens his own Museum in New York City which fails to do any business. This leads him to creating his very own freak show full of wonderful and exotic people who have mainly been shunned from the masses due to how they look and act. Barnum creates his very own 'circus' as a critic who goes to view the show calls it and it leads both him and all his performers on a wonderful journey full of joy and wonder.
Hugh Jackman is seriously good here as he makes it all just look effortless. Michelle Williams plays a very good part next to him and they do really work well together as husband and wife. Zac Efron is also good and out performs Jackman in a number of scenes especially the bar scene that they share when Jackman's Barnum tries to recruit Efron's character to join his circus through song which was a really fun and energetic scene. Rebecca Ferguson is absolutely stellar in her role and her scene where she sings was a big highlight for me it isn't her signing but my god is the scene powerful. Even Zendaya who didn't impress me at all in Spiderman Homecoming plays her role well and really looks the part. Of course this isn't going to be for everyone especially those who don't like musicals but if you're like me and love musicals that are done in a really old style fashion much like La La Land last year then you will love this.
2018 is off to a really strong start with this movie. It's a real smile inducer that must be seen on the big screen to be really appreciated. I loved every moment especially the musical numbers which as I said are the main attraction. P.T. Barnum really knocked this one out of the park!
