Darkest Hour review

Gary Oldman stars as Wintson Churchill the once Prime Minister of the Great Britain. This thrilling and inspiring true story begins on the eve of World War II as within just a number of days of actually becoming Prime Minister Churchill must face one of his hardest tests in his life. The impending war with Germany led by Heir Hitler. Backed by some really good performances from both Kirstin Scott Thomas as Oldman's on screen partner and Lily James who I've always been a big admirer of who's performance is absolutely charming and it's not just those two that are good here. This movie is lead by an absolutely incredible performance by Gary Oldman. Almost unrecognizable Oldman plays the part of Winston Churchill almost too well at times. He's arrogant in the face of war and quite somber in the face of defeat. The way his character develops over the course of the movie is also really good and shows just how hard it really was during war times for not only the people but also those in power. Churchill really had the weight of the world on his shoulders and it shows in Oldman's performance especially towards the end as he looks tired, disheveled and just fed up basically. I really do hope Gary Oldman gets that long overdue Academy Award come Oscar night though as his performance is just faultless. No offense to those who get nominated but I can't see anything bettering this.

This movie of course isn't going to be for everyone especially considering the subject matter as I myself was sort of skeptical beforehand thinking it would be boring and drawn out but after seeing it I would definitely have to recommend it. If you stick with it I'm sure you will leave the cinema feeling really good having just witnessed one of the best performances of the last decade. Yes I'd actually go that far in describing Oldman's performance here. Some scenes are truly masterful and the final shot is just amazing. It isn't a 5 star movie as one or two little small things stop it from being so but it is pretty damn close to being a masterpiece.
If you're a stickler for strong performances (like me) then this is something that I'd definitely recommend but on the other hand if you are more into comedy/action movies then avoid this at all costs because I can guarantee you'll be pretty bored but for me I loved it and would gladly sit down once again to watch it. A must see!
