The Disaster Artist review

The Disaster Artist stars both James and Dave Franco among many other comedic talents. It is based on the true story of Greg Sestero (Dave Franco) an aspiring film actor who meets the weird and mysterious Tommy Wiseau (James Franco) in an acting class where they form a unique friendship and decide to move to Los Angeles to pursue their dreams. That's the story in a nutshell and what a story this is.

James Franco is superb as Wiseau. Having just got nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance I would have to agree and really hope he walks away with the trophy come award season. He's funny, bizarre, cute and at times serious. Dave Franco also plays his part really well. His character being the complete opposite to that of James's and they share a really nice chemistry together (being real life brothers helps) as production begins on the movie that Wiseau himself writes he assembles a huge cast and crew and it begins. There is a lot of comedic moments peppered throughout but this movie really has a big heart at it's core and it showcases friendship and how powerful a bond between 2 people can be. All of this is backed by a really quality soundtrack filled with some amazing 90's tracks. It really shows that if you try hard enough you can achieve your dreams and become a star. People may laugh, they may be blunt to you but that should never stop you from striving to be the best that you can be and that is exactly what Tommy Wiseau did. The movie premiere scene towards the end is a real treat to watch.
Speaking of Tommy there's 3 ongoing jokes throughout the movie. It's not told how old he is where he is from and where he gets all his money. Even at the end credits which also show this movie and the real movie ''The Room'' side by side we're told that to this day nobody still knows Wiseau is from how old he is and how he got the money to fund the money which is believed to have cost over 6 million dollars. In a way this reminded me of Ed Wood with Johnny Depp. An inspiring actor/director/producer who was willing to risk everything to show people his vision and his idea of how a movie should be. I love the Disaster Artist it's funny at times and down to earth at others. It is a definite must see and easily one of my favorite movies of the year.
