Battle Of The Sexes review
Battle Of The Sexes stars Emma Stone as Billie Jean King and Steve Carell as Bobby Riggs. It follows the true story of the tennis match between world number one King and ex champ and hustler Riggs in 1973.
Having seen the trailer before going to see this I can say confidently that is in no way like the trailer. In fact the trailer gives off a whole other vibe to the movie. It makes it feel like a comedy and it really isn't. Sure there is some funny moments here and there but this is a drama and performance driven movie and boy are the performances really good. Emma Stone is just brilliant once again as Billie Jean King and she really is one of my favorite actresses working today. She's had this and her award winning role in La La Land all in not even one year. I actually think she'll get nominated once again for this because she really is that good in it. She plays world number one women's tennis champion Billie Jean King who along with her team are fed up of men getting paid 8 times the price that the women getting in prize money for winning a tournament. She decides to start her own tennis company along with her team and any and all women players are welcome. It really does take off and Bobby Riggs who is played amazingly by Carell takes note of this and challenges another women's tennis player to a match to which he beats her comfortably.
After all the taunting and downright vile things that he says about women he finally does get Billie Jean's attention and she does accept his offer to play her in a game of tennis. The final act of this movie is really really good as it shows that women really can be as good if not better at stuff then men. Times are a changing and Billie Jean King really did play her part in helping putting women on the map for those who only thought of them as those who should only be placed in a kitchen and in the bedroom while the men do everything better.
This is a seriously good movie and in my opinion it has to be already a contender for best picture at next year's academy awards. It's filled with tension, drama, lust, passion and at times some comedy. A definite must see for any movie fan who enjoys strong performances peppered with some really fun moments to boot. Brilliant, a must see!
