Gotham 4x3 : Those who hide behind masks review
Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.
Starting off this week's episode we see the origin of Ra's Al Ghul. Some guy (we aren't told his name) finds the would be Demon's Head dead in what is a field full of fallen warriors during a big battle that was set during AD 125. He takes Ra's body and brings it to another location which houses the lazarus pit, he proceeds to dump Ra's body into the pit and he comes out born again. The actor who plays Ra's was a little bit over the top when he came out of the pit but besides that everything else was fine about this scene. Told to look for his heir by this man who hands him a knife that will be the key to everything. More on the knife later.
Onto Bruce and we see him standing on a rooftop once again looking over a shipment belonged to Penguin being moved around. Love how him and Alfred communicate, always bickering and deciding what is right and what is wrong. But Bruce always the hero that he is or at least wants to be decides to investigate. Little does he know that Selina is also after the same shipment. She was sent to retrieve it from Barbara as that knife that I mentioned before is supposed to be on board and Barbara wants it because..she is working with Ra's! and apparently they are lovers also at least that's what I gathered from the final scene in the episode. I have BIG issues with this but I'm open to seeing where it goes. From what I know I don't remember Ra's ever being involved with anyone in the comics. First impressions for this is not good. But as I said I'm open to seeing where it leads.
David Mazouz who plays Bruce is just brilliant in this episode finally able to have some fun. The auction scene later in the episode where he buys the knife from 2 million dollars is just amazing. The banter between him and Barbara is just brilliant and everything I've imagined a young Bruce Wayne would do. I have one major grip with the whole Bruce being a vigilante and trying to find out more stuff. Does anyone in Gotham not even know who Bruce Wayne is? fair enough he put on another accent in this episode but I'm pretty sure he would have been all over the news when his parents were killed but people apparently don't know who he is? that just isn't believable at all. Gotham need to work on that.
Jim Gordon visits Carmine Falcone and gets into to see him without even anyone really questioning him. This is the same guy who killed Falcone's son but oh it's fine just go ahead let him. That really bothered me. We find out Falcone is dying and doctors have no idea why. We're introduced to his daughter Sofia who right away seems to take a shine to Jim. No idea what her intentions are but being a Falcone you can bet it already isn't good. Her and Jim talk some more before he has to head back to Gotham but who walks into the GCPD just seconds after him? yeah you guessed it Sofia. She reveals to Jim that she was playing him a bit to find out more about him and Gotham. They could have kept that a secret for another few episodes. Would have added a lot more intensity to their relationship and just the overall storyline. She wants to work with Jim to fix Gotham and bring down The Penguin.
The Riddler is let out of his icy doom by a crazed fan with a small little blow torch of all things..that was just plain ridiculous. She could have a least had a flamethrower or something more believable than a small little blow torch. She takes him to her home and almost nurses him back to full health. His brain is a jumbled mess as he can't even get the easiest of riddles. Of course he still manages to out smart her and makes his escape into the city. Shame Riddlette had to die because she was a really cool character that Gotham could have developed more I think. Later we see Ed walking in the street where he sees a massive picture of Penguin standing in front of him in cased in ice in the Iceberg Lounge. Can't wait to see what Ed does next as it's rumored he's going to team up with Solomon Grundy or as we known him on the show Butch!
This episode really annoyed me and times and I loved it at others. Definitely the weakest of the three episodes so far. Gotham has some serious potential this season and I just don't want them to squander it on poor storytelling. Also I really hope we get more scenes for Bruce like that auction scene because as I said it was just brilliant. Gotham was a bit of a let down this week but it was still a good watch.
