How To Train Your Dragon (2025) review
In what seems to becoming THE year of live action remakes of animated classics How To Train Your Dragon's attempt at bringing the world of Berk to life has arrived and it may infact be the very best attempt at doing so yet. Releasing all the way back in 2010 the original animated How To Train Your Dragon was a real treat with it's sequels only further expanding and building the world of Dragons and humans pretty much flawlessly. Fast forward 15 years to 2025 and the story and themes of this movie remain the same but there is plenty of changes mainly in character and world building. We're introduced to Hiccup a would be Dragon Killer who hasn't been given a chance to do so yet by his father Stoic who is the Cheif of their village with Gerard Butler repraising the same role from the animated movie.
Hiccup's life and for the better part all of Berk changes when after knocking a black shadowy Dragon out of the night sky. The following morning he sets off into the woods looking for the Dragon, he is successful and comes across the Dragon in a pit where it is unable to fly out of as a piece of it's tail has been blown off seemingly by Hiccup's shot. It doesn't take long for the two to form a really strong bond leading to Hiccup naming the Dragon Toothless. It is from this moment where the movie really kicks into gear as Hiccup attempts to prove to not just his friends and fellow would be Dragon Killers but also his father that he is worth of becoming a true viking.
As far as live action remakes goes How To Train Your Dragon may very well end up being the best one this year. It is full of charm, action and very likable characters. Visually it's stunning given it was filmed in Ireland as gorgeous landscapes fill up the screen time after time. Toothless and Hiccup fit together like a pair of warm gloves and their relationship really is the beating heart here. All in all this was a fantastic family fun movie filled with great scenes that'll long live in your mind. Now if humans could fly some Dragon's wouldn't that be fun??
