Lilo & Stitch (2025) review
The original Lilo & Stitch came out all the way back in 2002 and overtime it has become a true Disney classic. So as is the norm the past few years a live action retelling / remake is in order and I can now confirm that not only is Lilo & Stitch one of the best to date it is also one of the most meaningful and heartwarming too. The story follows a young Hawaiian girl named Lilo who befriends a runaway Alien whom she names Stitch all while attempting to reshape and reconstruct her broken family bond with her sister. The story is really simple but it is the characters and interactions that shine so bright. Special mention must go to the two 'alien's on Stitch's trial who are the real comedic relief here and they're great!
The casting of Lilo is pretty much spot on as not only does newcomer Maia Kealoha bring so much heart to Lilo but also so much playfulness and humour. The almost immediate bond she has with Stitch or to give it it's official name, Experiment 626 is quite adorable and very reletable for someone who just wants a best friend by their side. Her performance is pretty much effortless and she really is the star of the show here besides Stitch of course who is beautifully animated and feels so alive and enthusiastic. He is chaos incarnate and for a majority of the run time proves to be more of a nusance for the small Hawaiian town but overtime things change and he becomes a part of the ohana (family)
Lilo & Stitch is a real treat for fans of the original and newcomers alike. There is just the right amount of change here to make it different and not a like for like remake which I did appreciate. It's visually beautiful with it's Hawaiian motifs and celebration of island life. It's also very heartwarming and showcases the true power of friendship. Lilo & Stitch is well worth checking out and it is easily one of the best live action remkes of it's kind. Enjoyable and super sweet!
